After World War II
The first head began making Raku tea bowls as a side business after World War II.
What is Raku ware?
Raku ware is a type of pottery characterized by its naturally formed, uneven shapes achieved through “twisting and shaping” and its firing method called “drawing out firing,” which is rare worldwide. It originated in Kyoto approximately 400 years ago under the guidance of Sen no Rikyū.
The third head looks to the future
In 2001, he became the first Rakuyaki artisan to be certified as a Traditional Craftsman. In 2011, he was designated a “Future Master Craftsman” by Kyoto City. He serves as a part-time lecturer at Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts and assists in nurturing younger generations at the ceramics education institution from which he graduated.
Currently, he holds the positions of Chairman of the Ceramics Research Committee at the Kyoto City Industrial Research Institute and Chairman of the Kyoto Ceramics Association. He is also a member of the Kyoto Crafts Association.
