Kyoto Kiyomizu ware kiln Touan was founded in 1922 at Higashiyama Sennyū-ji Temple in Kyoto. Currently, about 20 artisans are involved in production at the main workshop, handling shaping and painting. All work is done by hand, making it one of the largest kilns in Kyoto.
This area, where the main workshop is located, was originally a source of clay for roof tiles. The founder, Tsuchibuchi Toshio, was a traditional Kyoto roof tile artisan.
The current head of Tōbō is the fourth-generation Tsuchibuchi Yoshiaki, who developed and established the “Flower Crystal” technique, allowing appreciation of diverse crystalline forms.
